Real Talk: The Mom Pooch Struggle is Very REAL

As much as I’ve learned to love and celebrate my curves, there are times when old thoughts begin to surface, and I have to work extra hard to believe everything it took me so long to learn about self-love and body confidence.

Swimsuit season, along with tropical vacations like my recent one, have a way of making old insecurities come up, but there’s something else that’s afflicted my body image over the past few years that I’ve yet to discuss: my mom pooch

Like almost every woman I know who’s carried a baby in her womb, having a stretched tummy simply comes with the territory, yet it’s still a very hard pill to swallow—especially for those of us who have struggled so long to accept the bodies we were born with, only to now be left with a different body we must learn to love all over again.

After having my son, my stomach was certainly stretched out, and I had some excess skin and fat, but it wasn’t as noticeable as it is now, after having my daughter.

If I’m being completely honest, it’s taken me a really long time to be able to even say the word “pooch without wanting to cry. C coming out and expressing my feelings about it feels like a major step in the right direction. And while I know I have a long journey ahead of me, learning to accept the new version of my body after babies, I’m finally ready to acknowledge it, accept it, and tackle my emotions head on, without hiding behind denial or the glimmer of hope that the appearance of my stomach will change over time.

So here’s my truth: I haven’t fully accepted my after-babies body (aka larger breasts, waistline and mom pooch), and that’s OKAY, because self-love and acceptance is a journey.

For now, I’m going to work on looking at myself in the mirror more, appreciating what my body has accomplished in birthing two healthy babies I have the honor of raising and loving. My hope is that anyone out there struggling like I am will do the same.

MY FAVOURITE UNIFORM

I’M WEARING  >>  Jeans: ZARA  |  T-Shirt: Uniqlo  |  Blazer: H&M Men (size 50) |  Belt: Brandy Melville (similar) | Bag: Jimmy Choo  |  Shoes: Converse

The other day I told my boyfriend: I just recently became a Tech Entrepreneur and this right here could be my Steve Jobs uniform. He laughed and told me; I give it half a day until you have changed outfit!

The truth is he is right, I was wearing a second look by the end of the day (to the gym though), but the truth also is that I honestly could wear this look every day if I didn’t have to show new looks constantly. I have said this a million times but I cant say it enough; a black blazer is a MUST HAVE!

TREND-SPOTTING; THE JEANS SILHOUETTE YOU SHOULD GO FOR THIS FALL

You might be thinking; Thanks but no thanks, but hear me out, this will be THE jeans silhouette this fall and its better if you get acquainted with it. Long are the days where skinny jeans were a thing, in fact, I can’t remember when I wore skinny jeans for the last time, in fact I think I got rid of all of mine -so they better not come back in style, otherwise I have a problem-.

I have been wearing nothing but 501 vintage levis for a solid three years and my collection is growing rapidly and obsessively, but a few months ago (around February)I picked up a couple of wide leg jeans from the Uniqlo U collection and I was hooked. I wore them most of my trip to Las Vegas and I started to get acquainted with them rapidly. Fast forward 6 months and I already got 5 pairs of wide leg jeans and that pretty much all I want to wear lately.

ZARA has a lot of cool and inexpensive options if you want to dive into the trend, but I do advice you to try them on first to see if its something that would compliment your body type. In fact, please upload them on to SIWI and you will get REAL-TIME feedback on whether you should get them or not (I will be watching and voting too of course!).

THE BLUE TIE DYE DRESS

I’M WEARING  >>  Dress: ZARA  |  Shoes: Hogan  |  Bag: Jimmy Choo  |  Belt: Off White

This blue dress has been one of the best score I have ever found on the ZARA sale. I actually took it with me to Mexico but STUPIDLY, I put it on a hanger under another dress and I actually never saw it until I unpacked in Amsterdam.

HOME MAKEOVER WITH MADE.COM

I Can’t even remember how long it’s been since I got asked to do a house tour for you guys. The reason why I had never really done one is because my home decor was kind of a work in progress for a very long time. Fast forward 3 years after I moved into my new apartment and I came across with a new big and amazing change; My boyfriend and I decided to move in together! *Cries in Spanish in a good way hahaha

We looked for other apartments for a while but quite frankly, everything we were seeing was more expensive and not as cool as my current apartment was (also pretty great location). So after scouting Amsterdam for about 6 months, we decided to stay at my apartment and make it OURS. The first thing that came into my mind (and my boyfriend mentioned) was that there was too much pink. My apartment was really a true “single girl apartment” and i love that, but I was also longing to make it grow up a little -I did love my pink velvet chairs but I was not too resistant to let them go-. I have always been EXTREMELY enthusiastic about interior design (I actually studied that at University), so whenever I get the chance to decorate, my creativity really goes wild.

Moving in together was extremely exciting and it was important for me to create a space that felt a little less ME and a little more US, sort of like pressing a reset button and creating a new space that would fit both of us.

I didn’t have too much space to work with, just because we have 3 enormous closets scattered around the apartment to fit all of our clothes, so that immediately makes rooms a little smaller. I tried to optimise the layout and even though certain features of the apartment remained (like the print wall), I does feel like its a big change!

First and foremost, I wanted to get a BBVC “Big Blue Velvet Couch“. You have NO IDEA how long I have been dreaming with having a velvet couch. I wanted to make the couch the most important feature of the room and everything else I picked was complementing that. The TV unit was also a MUST as I have had my TV sitting on the floor since I moved in. The issue was that the cable connectors are in the corner of the room and I simply couldn’t find a cool corner TV unit that fit the measurements of that space, so I just left it and left it until having my TV on the floor became “normal” to me.

I went for this TV unit as I have noticed myself pinning a bunch of TV units that looked like antique wood and this was the most similar to that I could find. It’s interesting how I used to go for a completely different aesthetic in terms of decoration and recently, I am leaning towards velvet, wood and green shades.

“I wanted to make the apartment a little less ME and a little more US”.

Unfortunately we don’t have space for 4 chairs in our small dining room, so we went for these two amazing leather chairs and have two folded ones stored inside a closet for when we have guests coming over. We traded the pink velvet chairs for two black leather chairs and the marble table for this elegant dark glass table (even though we still kept the marble table in the balcony “just in case”). The cutlery and plates are also from MADE.com and are absolute favourites of mine. I chose the cutlery to match the legs of the chairs and the plates match the whole vibe of the living room.

1. COUCH  |  2. TABLE  |  3. MIRROR  |  4. VASE  |  5. TV UNIT |  6. CHAIRS  |  7. RUG  |  8. PLATES  |  9. SILVERWEAR

We still have to redecorate the room, but we’re waiting to bring my boyfriends bed over and when it’s in, I pimp that room too! (and of course share).

Let me know what you think and if you want any decoration tips!
