My Plant-Based Journey

My Plant-Based Journey | Girl with Curves

A couple months back, I shared some specifics on what my self-care routine consists of, and as a result, I received lots of questions about my plant based lifestyle. Today, I wanted to take the time to explain a bit more about my plant-based journey, and answer some of the questions that keep showing up in my DMs, in hopes of shedding some light on my own personal experience and helping you all along in your own self-care journey’s!

Back in November of 2018, the sciatic, lower/mid-back and knee pain I had been experiencing for over 13 years were at an all-time high. My depression and anxiety I’d struggled with since my early teens was through the roof, I was getting sinus infections every other month that were often flared by several food intolerances and allergies my doctor and I had yet to narrow down, and I felt miserable every single day, suffering from headaches, mood-swings and general lethargy by the end of every day. No matter what I did, I couldn’t seem to shake getting sick, feeling tired, unhappy, and I was fed-up with feeling that way.

Although my husband went plant based a year before I did, which definitely had a big impact on my eatings habits, I was reluctant to fully join him in cutting out meat, diary and eggs completely, as I didn’t think I could be happy or satisfied forgoing my favorite chicken dishes and the occasional cheese pizza and chocolate chip cookies. After experiencing a really bad stretch of food allergies that provoked a gnarly sinus infection and some excruciating lower back pain that left me almost unable to sit for a week, I decided I was going to do everything in my power to change the way I felt, which thanks to my husband’s nutritional research that led him to go plant based the year before, told me I had to start with what I was eating.

To kick things off, I did a deep dive into food and nutritional research, which ultimately led me to watching several documentaries around plant based eating, in order to fully understand what the general health benefits of forgoing meat, dairy and eggs were, and fully understand what I could expect and how it could potentially impact my health and wellness. Hearing countless stories of people who had never felt better in their lives after cutting out these three food groups, I decided I would give myself 3 days to see how I felt after doing the same.

Day 1 was tolerable because I had planned my meals ahead. I ate my usual granola for breakfast, followed by a veggie bowl at Chipotle for lunch and spaghetti marinara for dinner. Day 2 was rough. Major cravings for my typical go-to comfort foods kicked in, and I felt like I was going crazy! By the morning of day 3 though, my usual lower back and sciatic aches and pains were gone, my 2 pm headache never set in, and I had much more energy than usual, so I decided to push the experiment to 3 weeks – after all, your tastebuds typically take 2 weeks to expire and regenerate, so I figured I needed to give myself more time to get over the cravings hump.

By week 2 I felt like a new person – no more daily headaches, sciatic, lower back or knee pain, tons of energy, and I was even getting more restful sleep after struggling with insomnia for years! By week 3 I was convinced this was the lifestyle for me, because I had honestly NEVER FELT BETTER!

But then I got my period on week 4, and the cravings for my favorite junk foods took over, so I gave in, wanting to see if I still enjoyed those foods after eating plant based for over 3 weeks.

Upon taking just one bite of my favorite chicken tortilla soup, I was shocked when the taste wasn’t what I remembered. It tasted completely different – it was oily and bland, but I took a few more bites just to be sure my tastebuds were working! An hour later, my stomach hurt and I felt nauseous. The next day I woke up with all the joint pains I had finally rid myself of. I was frustrated and angry, but that evening I had a craving for panang chicken curry from my favorite local Thai restaurant, so again I gave in, but remembered how I felt after eating chicken tortilla soup the night before, so I got a vegan option as well, just in case I didn’t like the chicken version. The smell of the chicken curry alone made me sick to my stomach, but I took a bite anyway, truly wanting to see if I still liked it. I literally gagged, spit it out, and dove into the vegan curry. That was the last time I had meat, in December of 2018, and I haven’t had it (or dairy or eggs) since.

Like I mentioned in my previous post, when I first went plant based I was determined to find vegan alternatives to lots of my favorites, so while I was technically eating plant based, my diet was still made up of lots of processed foods, which I now know contain inflammatory ingredients like oils and processed sugars, which eventually caused the same aches and pains I was trying to eliminate in the first place. Although I enjoyed my plant based lifestyle over the next year and a half, my joint pains came back, my depression and anxiety returned, and I felt the same as I had before: constantly tired, lethargic and unhappy.

This past June, after coming to terms with the fact that while I was eating plant based, I still wasn’t caring for my body the way it needed to feel its absolute best, I did a deeper dive into nutrition and discovered the benefit of a whole food plant based diet, which meant eliminating processed and refined foods, including oils and processed sugars.

Today, I enjoy a high carb, low fat, whole food plant based diet, fueling my body the way I feel my very best, and I couldn’t be happier or more satisfied with every meal! I’ve even dropped some substantial weight in the process.

This is How I’m Dressing up Leggings Right Now

This is How I'm Dressing up Leggings Right Now | Girl With Curves

It’s no surprise that leggings have become a go-to staple in our wardrobes this year, with most of us spending so much time at home. For me, leggings are a welcome departure from denim, and I love that they work for everyday, whether I’m lounging around the house, running errands or walking my dog. This outfit is a perfect example of how I’m dressing up leggings right now, paired with some recent finds.

SPLURGE – SAVE : THE PRADA MONOLITH LACED SHOES VS ZARA

Welcome to a new Splurge-Save post! This week is dedicated to one of my favourite shoe and even though this already came out last year, I am still equally as obsessed.

I used to Splurge the it came to shoes and bags, not often but I did, however, I realised that when it comes to statement shoes, splurging sometimes might not be the best option. E.g the Balenciaga triple S sneakers which I got, wore maybe 5 times and then wondered why on earth did I get them.

Don’t get me wrong, I still “like” them, but my point is that I didn’t wear them enough to justify the price and now I wish I didn’t. I’ve gotten a bit smarter on how I spend my money and I have become a DIY machine during the quarantine, however since I still couldn’t get these Prada shoes out of my mind, I started to scout for an alternative.

I found these laces shoes at ZARA a few weeks back and even tho they are not identical, they still have the same vibe and chunkiness I like so they will do, for now :P.

How to Dress up Loungewear

How to Dress up Loungewear | Girl with Curves

Like many of you, I’ve been wearing tons of loungewear this year. But just because we have a need to be comfy while working from home, doesn’t mean we can’t dress up a bit from time to time, am I right?

My favorite way to dress up a lounge pant is with a turtleneck and pointed toe flats. Add a pair of earrings and pop of color lipstick and I’m ready to take this look on a zoom call!

I prefer a wide leg pull on pant because it feels like pajamas but looks like a sleek office trouser if you find the right fabric. Linking some of my favorite lounge pants below:

RUNWAY-MYWAY; THE ROTATE DRESS

I DIY’ed this dress back in August, but I only filmed the video and never shot photos to show you the dress in its full glory.

This RUNWAY-MYWAY and DIY was inspired on the Danish brand Rotate and even though the original is made of velvet, I think MYWAY was also very cool indeed.

You can watch the full DIY video on my IGTV here. I really hope you like it!

DIY : THE GANNI OVERSIZED COLLAR INSPIRED CARDIGAN

I have been wanting to DIY this cardigan FOR MONTHS! However, I found it hard to find the perfect cardigan to add the collar to, until I sighted this blue cardigan at a vintage shop in Amsterdam.

I didn’t have a pattern for the collar, so I had to create something very bespoke to fit my cardigan specifically. I reckon coming up with the pattern was what took me the longest and I hope I explained it well enough in the video. Keep in mind though that I pretty much yolo’ed it as I haven’t made a lot of patterns before, however, I am VERY happy with the result!

I hope you like it and thanks for watching!

These $23 Faux Leather Leggings are a Must-Have

These $23 Faux Leather Pants are a Must-Have | Girl with Curves

As someone who wears lots of jeans and leggings, especially over the past few months while spending so much time at home, I’m excited to see the faux leather trend become a staple for fall. Not only are faux leather leggings and pants a great, elevated alternative to basic leggings and denim, but they’re surprisingly wearable, as they dress up and down quite easily and work for various occasions!

I found this version at Walmart, and they’re quickly becoming my favorite pant. They’ve got tons of stretch which makes them ultra comfortable, and they’re extremely versatile too! I was honestly shocked at the super affordable price tag for this fabric quality and craftsmanship. In fact, I was so happy with the legging that I bought this pant as well, and love them just as much, since they function as a pant, but are just as comfy as a legging.

Paired with a heart print sweater, denim jacket and sneakers like I’ve done here, faux leather leggings are a great go-to for casual days. I threw this look together for a quick trip to the grocery store and love how it came together. The casual texture of the denim, sweater knit and white sneakers dress the leather down in a way that still feels polished but practical for running errands. For another casually comfy option, you can pair them with a tee and cardigan, like this. I’ll definitely be wearing these faux leather jeans for date nights paired with peplum sweaters and booties in the coming months!

TWO WAYS TO WEAR A VELVET DRESSTHIS FALL

Happy Monday guys! Hope you had an amazing weekend. Mine was quite relaxing and we spent Sunday at the Museum and binge watched a scary series all evening. It’s The Autumn and Halloween + Dia de los Muertos is around the corner, so I always feel like watching scary movies during the month of October.

But enough with the weekend talk, let’s talk Fashion shall we?

I recently got this Velvet Pinko dress and I am here for it. I absolutely love velvet during the Fall, which makes total sense since it’s such a cozy fabric, but there is also such an elegance to it.

Because this year has been pretty much a semi write off because of Covid, there are not many places nor parties to go to. I am still trying to get dressed up every now and then to keep my sanity though -believe me, I would wear sweatpants every day this year if I could, but it doesn’t help my mindset I’ve come to realise-.

This dress is a total statement on its own, so for the first look I only styled it with statement combat boots (so I didn’t make it too girly) and a contrasting color velvet bag.

Dress: PINKO | Boots: PINKO | Bag: PINKO

DRESSED DOWN

For the second look, I wanted to make it more casual and cozy, so I threw on an oversized camel sweater (vintage), kept the same boots and added a beret to match the sweater.

Which one do you like the most?

ATHLEISURE FIX

Work from home or working out from home both calls for an outfit for itself. No I’m not referring to shopping online, but I still mean an athleisure look that becomes one of the reasons to not skip workout. After all, what you wear is how you feel right? If you’re a newbie to working […]

Currently Obsessing Over: Cardigans

CurrentlyObsessing Over: Cardigans | Girl with Curves

When it comes to an outer layer that’s easy to throw on and go, the cardigan is at the very top of my list. Whether layered over jeans and a tee, a dress, skirt and turtleneck or leggings and a tunic (my personal fave as of late!), a cardigan can pull your look together with ease and very little effort, which is certainly something I appreciate when polishing off an outfit.

Here are a few of my favorite open-front styles to wear over the outfits mentioned above:

This is What my Self-Care Practice Consists Of

This is What my Self-Care Practice Consists Of | Girl with Curves

Back in July, I shared how I finally started taking care of myself the way my mind and body deserve. As a result, I’m less stressed, less anxious, sleeping better, eating healthier than ever, my aches and pains are gone, and I’ve even lost some weight.

Here are the specific things I’ve changed in order to prioritize self-care in my daily life:

Life after Lockdown: Conscious shopping

Lockdown has changed everyone’s life. Starting from losing jobs one after another to breaking down emotionally and mentally, we have all been there. However, while we go through these “break-ups” we have to keep our minds sane enough and start spending economically.  Except grocery stores booming -no matter what, other businesses have gone down tremendously. OUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT BY @ALEJANDROLOAR

Earlier this Summer, my friend Alejandro Loar -who’s also an amazing lifestyle and wedding photographer- asked me if we wanted to do our engagement shoot while the city was still relatively quiet and empty.

As most of you know, I got engaged on the 20th of January, just before the world went upside down with the pandemic, so straight after that we went into quarantine and it was a really tough time for all of us around the world.

Doing this engagement shoot was that ray of sunshine in the middle of so much chaos and I am SO HAPPY with the result. Beyond that, I just cannot wait for out wedding next year!

SPLURGE-SAVE : THE FRANKIE SHOP JOGGER “SUIT” VS H&M MEN

Welcome to Splurge-Save; a space within Stylescrapbook where we scout the web for some of the best looks and their alternatives, so as the name suggest, you can decide whether you want to Splurge or Save ;)

Some of you might know The Frankie Shop for popularising the shoulder pad muscle tee since last Summer, but they recently added the “Winter version” with their jogger sets. What I love about these joggers sets and what sets them apart from me are obviously the almightily shoulder pads. I recently came across the new H&M Blank Staples collection for Men and it resembled a lot to the white version of TFS jogger suit.

Immediately my lightbulb went on and I decided to DIY my own version of the Frankie Shop jogger set with the H&M Men version, all I needed extra was a pair of shoulder pads, a needle and thread.

The Frankie Shop: SweatpantsSweatshirt | H&M Men: SweatpantsSweatshirt
I am wearing the H&M mens track suit and added shoulder pads.

I just absolutely love the end result and to be honest, I think they look almost identical. You can of course still Splurge on The Frankie Shop set, however, if you want to Save, the H&M Blank Staples collection for men is the way to go.

I am quite tall so I took a Pants size M because I needed them to be long enough and I wanted a slightly baggy look. If you are a shorter than me, perhaps S or even XS (depending on your usual sizing) would do the trick. For the sweatshirt, I went for a size XS and bought a pair of shoulder pads to add that little pow wow into the shoulders.

Stay tuned for more Splurge-Save posts!

Comfort is the New Fashion Essential

It’s been a while since we stepped out to just hang out with friends, had a girls night or even dressed in our smart formals for office. MENSWEAR : FEAR OF GOD

It wont come as a surprise that I am deeply inspired by menswear (e.g. here and here and endless amounts of posts), so it has always been in the back of my mind to add that ingredient into StyleScrapbook as well.I know that I have a few male fashion enthusiasts following me as well but not only that, I also know that a lot of you are very inspired by menswear too, so I decided to incorporate Menswear posts every now and then.

I must have been living under a rock but I just recently discovered the LA brand “Fear of God“, while browsing Vogue Runway. I was so triggered and inspired by most of the looks on Lorenzo’s latest collection, that I just really wanted to share. These looks are the perfect mix between impeccable tailoring and chic athleisure, the color palette is absolutely perfect for transitioning into fall and most of these looks would work on women as well.

I really feel like replicating them in womenswear all to be honest, maybe even DIY’ing a couple of things and asking my fiancĂ© to pose for me in some of the looks as well. Its gonna be a hard sell but I will try my very best ;)
