Elle Fanning’s Met Gala muse is 1970s Barbie

A front-row regular since her teens, Elle Fanning mastered the red-carpet princess moment long ago—just think of her in lavender tulle Rodarte at the Cannes premiere of The Beguiled or caped Valentino couture at the Berlin International Film Festival. So, when the Met Gala theme calls for all-out glamour via “camp”, what’s a girl to do? Turn up the volume, obviously.

“Elle’s been one of the faces of the Miu Miu campaigns for a while,” explains the actress’s stylist Samantha McMillen, who is also behind Brie Larson’s best looks. “This year, she’s going with Prada and wearing Miu Miu.” The look? A two-piece comprised of a crop top and bell-bottom trousers, offset with some spectacular accessories. Below, McMillen breaks down the outfit for Vogue.

On working with Miu Miu

“Camp is such a fun theme to work on with Mrs Prada. Throughout her career she’s executed so many looks that are technically camp, but in this incredibly beautiful, fashionable way. She’s great at taking a concept like that and making it universal. At the Met Gala, you always need to take into account the designer who has invited you and then think about how the theme could be melded together with their work.”

On the accessories

“We wanted to see what the brand would come up with, but we also took our ideas to them. For instance, Prada and Miu Miu use a lot of oversized charms—whether it be on a keychain or big brooches—and we were inspired by those 1980s necklaces with the kitschy plastic charms that you can take on and off because Elle’s mum has been collecting them for years. So we took that concept to Miu Miu and they made big, chunky charm necklaces for us to layer. The charms make them really special. There are ones that say: ‘The Met’, ‘Camp’ and ‘2019’, and smaller ones with flowers, animals and unicorns. There’s even a charm that is a cameo of Elle, with a picture of her from the last Met Ball she went to, the one in 2017 where she had the blue Miu Miu gown and vintage tiara. So it’s meta and it’s camp!”

On her unexpected Met Gala muse

“Because of the necklaces, the rest of the look needed to be rather simple. With the outfit itself, we went for a 1970s Barbie vibe. It’s Elle, but to the nth degree—super Barbie-ish and super camp. I also love that salmon pink colour. Elle loves to wear pastels, so we wanted it to be in keeping with the tones she likes, but also to pump it up a bit and be bolder.”

On dissecting the theme

“The Met Gala is a lot of fun, but it can be tough depending on the theme. In the past, it didn’t matter as much if you went with the theme or not, but that’s completely changed in the last six or seven years. Now, people are really hardcore about embracing it. There are so many things you can do with Camp: Notes on Fashion. I think the last time people had this much fun was probably with the Punk: Chaos to Couture theme in 2013. The best part is that it’s about the designers. It’s their night, so it’s fun when they can express themselves through their art and even better when they take guests who really bring those creations to life.”
