THE MAGIC OF GOLDEN MILK AND HOW IT’S HELPING MY STOMACH

I shared on my sorties last week that I have been dealing with some stomach issues recently. In fact, I have been dealing with stomach issues as far as I can remember but somehow, I have managed to keep them controlled throughout the years.

First and foremost, I am one of those poor souls that have been diagnosed with lactose intolerance, which seems like the end of the world if you love chocolate like I do. I somehow have learnt to accept it and mostly got on with my life as usual (despite the usual cravings every now and then, specially during my period). I am not allergic to lactose, but if it slips in one of my meals, I feel absolutely awful for the next hours to come so I try to avoid it all together if possible.
Along with lactose intolerance, I was also -recently- diagnosed with onion and garlic intolerance which I’ve heard is actually quite common, so despite my love for both I also have to avoid them. Long story short, I have a sensitive stomach so I tend to be quite careful with what I put in my mouth.

Its not unusual for me to get an indigestion but two weeks ago, I felt awful for longer than usual and I just couldn’t understand what was going on.  I waited a few days and tried to eat healthier but I was feeling sick every day, my stomach was super bloated, discomfort in my solar plexus area and I felt like I was having a perpetual indigestion. Almost 9 days later, my boyfriend told me it was time to go to the doctor and off I went.

She told me that it could either be a stomach virus (which was unlikely since those tend to last about 2/3 days), but that another explanation could be that I had gastritis, so we needed to test for that.

I am always so weary of taking medication and antibiotics because I know how harsh they can be with the stomach, so whenever I feel sick, I always try to research home remedies that can help me with the complaints. After my doctors appointment, I got home and started typing away because I was determined and convinced I would be able to help myself heal (if you haven’t watched the Netflix documentary “Heal”, I really recommend it!).

During my research, I kept bumping into one common denominator: Turmeric and so down the rabbit hole I went.

But what is Turmeric;

“Turmeric is the spice that gives curry its yellow colour and it has been used in India for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb.

Recently, science has started to back up what Indians have known for a long time — it really does contain compounds with medicinal properties. These compounds are called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin.

Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. However, the curcumin content of turmeric is not that high. It’s around 3%, by weight. Most of the studies on this herb are using turmeric extracts that contain mostly curcumin itself, with dosages usually exceeding 1 gram per day. It would be very difficult to reach these levels just using the turmeric spice in your foods.Therefore, if you want to experience the full effects, you need to take a supplement that contains significant amounts of curcumin.”

This text is an extract from one of the many articles I have read on turmeric in the past few days, but what I REALLY wanted to share with you is the effects I -almost immediately- started seeing after taking it. As I was reading all of tis information, I came across with the magic potion of “Golden Milk, which is essentially a turmeric latte or a matcha latte but if you swap the coffee or the matcha for turmeric powder. I went too my closest supermarket to but a tray with turmeric powder and I begin my test.

I made my first Golden milk about 5 days ago and after about an hour, I could already notice a MASSIVE difference. My stomach bloating went down so fast and after 9 days of being double my size due to stomach issues, I was super happy and relieved to be feeling like myself again, believe me!. I have been replacing my morning coffee with Golden milk for the past few days and after reading the benefits but not only day, seeing the difference it has made in my body, I am not planning on stopping. Further than that though, I am planning to add turmeric supplements into my diet as weak just to make sure I am getting the right dosage to really take advantage of all the health benefits.

Anyway! After a whole lotta explanations and my own personal testimonial, I wanted to share the -very simple- recipe with you;

-1/2 cup of milk (I can’t drink milk so I am replacing the milk with either coconut, oat or almond milk)
-1 tsp of turmeric powder
-1 small piece of grated ginger OR 1/2 tsp of ginger powder
-1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder
-1 pinch of black ground pepper
-1 tsp of honey or brown sugar (optional).

What I do is heat up the milk, add all the ingredients and then use one of those little milk frother machines to make it al foamy.

The reason for adding the pinch of pepper is not for the taste, but because the substance found in pepper helps with the absorption of all the good stuff turmeric has into our system, so make sure you don’t miss that step.

I REALLY hope this helps you too and I would love to hear stories fi you have already tried this, or which other home remedies you use for a healthier gut. Also, if you want to read more benefits on drinking Golden Milk, click HERE.

Have an amazing weekend guys!
