Riccardo Tisci on the new Burberry: “I want to make it more democratic”

For the campaign of his debut collection at Burberry, Riccardo Tisci commissioned six photographers to translate “all the different ways to see beige,” he told Vogue. It seemed apt considering 44 looks in the collection were in shades of the hue. Beige has long been a key part of the Burberry legacy, and Tisci wanted to explore all facets. After the show, reviews were overwhelmingly in favour of this refined and muted palette, which was also rooted in Tisci’s idea of Britain today and his desire to dress all generations.

“I was thinking a lot about journeys as I started putting together my first Burberry collection,” said the Lombardy born designer about his much-awaited first show. Tisci, the former creative director of Givenchy, had spent several years as a young design student in London, and presented his graduate collection in the Brit capital two decades ago.

“I was inspired by how much London—the city that made me dream of becoming a designer— has evolved. This show is a celebration of cultures, the traditions and the codes of this historic fashion house and of the eclecticism that makes up the beautiful diverse United Kingdom.”

For his 134-piece debut, Tisci focused on simplicity, elevating the classics into modern territory. Undoubtedly, the beige trench is Burberry’s most recognisable symbol. So, in his homage to the legacy of the British brand, Tisci opened the show with his rendition of the classic. Setting the stage for his vision for the brand was a trench coat cinched at the waist with a chocolate-brown belt, worn over a striped shirt dress. There were other versions too, with beautiful detailing— some more utilitarian pieces, a scarf variation, another festooned with ring epaulettes, one with feathers and pearls, a silk-satin version, a luxe croc and even a caped minidress. “I want people to come to Burberry and buy a beautiful trench, a beautiful car coat, a beautiful suit, a beautiful evening dress, beautiful trainers. Not just one product; I want to make it more open, more democratic,” he told British Vogue.

“When I first came to Burberry I spent a lot of time in the archives, discovering the history of the house, and this is where my beige love story began,” he says in an exclusive conversation with Vogue India. It’s a palette he continued into autumn/winter 2019, where he brought beige into formalwear. “My first season for Burberry was about developing my alphabet for the brand, it was about identifying new letters and new codes, and beige was a key element of this. Now, I have started to put these letters together to begin to write the book and these ever-evolving cues and codes play a lead role in my story. The beige colour palette will continue to be a defining element of my collections.”
