Love colour? This is the collaboration your home (and wardrobe) needs

What happens when fashion marries design? For the multi-hyphenate Samyukta Nair, the answer lies in her latest collaboration with two design experts (from completely different worlds), Rooshad Shroff and designer duo Saaksha & Kinni. While the former is an architect and interior designer, the latter are known for their contemporary fashion designs. Titled ‘Pixel’, the collaboration brings to light their collective love for prints, geometry and abstract florals.

The collection, which sees plates designed by Shroff and garments by Saaksha & Kinni, focuses on a traditional aesthetic with a touch of Indian contemporary. “Being well versed with the designers’ work, I noticed their mutual love for abstract florals and geometry, which is what made me bring them together to create a synergy in aesthetic that gave form to their own distinctive mediums,” says Nair, adding that ‘Pixel’ essentially reinforces Clove’s belief in everyday luxury. “The line carries an exclusive range of Shroff’s plates in intricate abstract floral marble inlay, while Saaksha & Kinni’s contemporary silhouettes in vibrant prints showcase the desire for individuality that will only be available at Clove,” says Nair.

Expounding on the inspiration behind their collection, designers Saaksha Bhat and Kinnari Kamat say they found themselves reminiscing about their childhood vacations spent in Gujarat and Rajasthan. “We have taken iconic motifs and shapes from both states and incorporated the same into our story. The ikats and geometrical florals found in Gujarati architecture, and leheriya from Rajasthan, run rampant in this collection. The idea was to take the traditional Indian prints and modernise them in a contemporary way. Hand micro-pleating is also used, which has been directly inspired by the art of Gujarati crushing,” explains Saaksha Bhat.

With so many iterations of the floral motif reinterpreted by a multitude of designers, how did the duo find a way to modernise it? “Our aim this season was to take the delicate silhouette of a flower and transform it into something dark, mysterious and abstract. The idea then was to pixelate the abstract floral, thus alienating it from any concept of femininity and making it whimsical,” says Kamat. Expect relaxed and flowy dresses, kaftans, capes and blouses in cotton silk and organza, all in a bright colour palette of blue, pink, orange and grey.

Meanwhile, Shroff reinterprets the floral and geometrical prints featuring on the designers’ creations to give them new life in his collection of plates. “Each plate is a unique print inlayed using white makrana and black bheslana marble, along with semi-precious stones like malachite, lapis lazuli and red onyx,” he explains. “The prints are made from pixelated flowers, which are then distorted to create an optical illusion effect, adding a bit of fluidity to break the rigidity of the geometry.”

The plates have been created by artisans from Agra. “These artisans have numerous generations of inlay know-how, and this collection is an attempt to make craftsmanship contemporary,” says Shroff. The collection is available in two sizes (five inches and eight inches), and retails at Rs 7,000 onwards.
