Meet Virginie Viard, the woman who will succeed Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel

Last evening was a sad moment in fashion history, when news broke out that one of industry’s most iconic figures, Karl Lagerfeld, passed away at the age of 85 in Paris. Following the announcement, Chanel, which was helmed by Karl Lagerfeld until now, put out a statement expressing their loss and revealing the future of the storied French fashion house. “Virginie Viard, director of Chanel’s Fashion Creation Studio and Karl Lagerfeld’s closest collaborator for more than 30 years, has been entrusted by Alain Wertheimer with the creative work for the collections, so that the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld can live on,” read the company’s statement. Despite Viard’s long association with Lagerfeld, little is known about her yet. With Paris Fashion Week coming up, here’s a quick fact file on Lagerfeld’s successor.

—Virginie Viard started out as an intern for haute couture embroidery at house of Chanel. From there on, she worked at Chloé with Karl Lagerfeld for another five years, after which she returned to Chanel.

—Viard used to work in costume design before fashion. She was involved in the making of clothes for iconic movies like Three Colors Blue (1993) and Three Colors White (1994). She took the bow with Karl Lagerfeld after Chanel’s spring/summer 2019 show. For couture 2019, Viard took the bow alone at the end of the show, since Lagerfeld was too unwell to attend.

—In a rare interview with The Telegraph, Viard spoke about her work at Chanel. “I coordinate the teams, liaise with suppliers and choose fabrics. Then, of course, I do fittings with Karl. As soon as I receive his sketches, the process begins. I try to please him, but I like to surprise him too.”
