The Fashion Week + Influencer relationship has had an interesting development in the past few years, to the point where it’s very common and normal that a lot of girls in the industry wear head to toe looks from the designers showing during each Fashion Week. I don’t particularly have something against that because I know it’s part of the game and it also help us strengthen relationships with the PR’s and designers we work with, but what I always wonder is; When you are known for your personal style, or have built a brand around yourself because of your style, are you playing a fair game if you are only wearing looks styled by someone else? And even beyond that, getting praised by the street style photographers for looks that you can’t actually take credit for?
I have been thinking about this for years but never voiced my opinion regarding this until now. I will not say that I have never gotten dressed for shows before because I have, but what I will say is that when I have agreed to do it, I am always very vocal about the fact that I want to have final say in the styling and not only that, it’s very rare that I do a head to toe (meaning look, shoes and bag), as I want to keep it as real and authentic by mixing it with things from my own wardrobe.
The key for me throughout the almost 11 and a half years of blogging has been mixing high and low, or mostly trying to show you guys that style is not something that you can only find in high priced items, but that you can really build and develop a personal style with everything and anything, from vintage clothing, high street brands and of course designers. I have been doing Fashion Week for almost 8/9 years in a row now and on that period, I have always created my own looks, styled them in advance at home and take pride in this as well, because I re-use and re-style items giving them a fresh new approach on the current trends.
Even during Fashion Week, I try to keep as true to my own personal style as I can and if I feel like wearing a black “suit” with a DIY cropped sweatshirt, I do that. There seems to be a misconception that just because it’s Fashion Week, we have to wear the craziest looks we own to get noticed and I don’t really feel like playing by those rules. “Wear what you like and like what you wear” has always been my motto. I dress for myself and if I am lucky enough to inspire you in future looks of your own, then I consider my job well done.
