Curvy girls can wear anything they like, and these pictures are proof

Shyma Shetty, 32
Designer, Huemn

The trend: Ruffles and volume

– I’m not a fearful dresser. I enjoy both fashion and my body.

– Rules are meant to be broken. If everyone subscribed to rules, we wouldn’t have new fashion at all.

– Carry it with confidence. That’s the trick to wearing anything. Make sure it makes you happy and that it’s  comfortable and occasion appropriate.

– Oversized silhouettes are a huge trend right now. Zendaya, Erykah Badu, Rihanna and the Olsens are nailing volume.

– I would wear unexpected shoes with this look—tall leopard print Christian Louboutin pumps, Loewe hybrid heels or cool sneakers.

– I’ve collected many statement pieces over the years. My Huemn sweatshirt with ‘DON’T TRY’ in leather letters always turns heads.

The expert: “The volume and ruffles have to be in control—they should not drown you. The material has to be right, too. Try not to superficially mask the curves with layers; show skin by highlighting a favourite body part. Eventually, it all comes down to body language.” —Nimish Shah, founder, Shift; creative director, Bhaane

Kritika Gill, 30
Makeup artist and hairstylist

The trend: Horizontal stripes

– I like to highlight my shoulders, neck and décolletage. I’m most conscious of my arms and stomach. I always tend to layer to avoid showing them.

– I was concerned about all the fabric making me look frumpy. But I feel really great and comfortable.

– I’ve been eyeing a lot of striped swimsuits lately. Forever 21 Plus has a really fun yellow and white one that I love.

– Brigitte Bardot wore stripes best. She was simple and effective.

– I would carry a small coin bag with this look. Like the Dolce & Gabbana raffia crossbody.

– I can’t stop buying Adidas slides. They are so practical for Mumbai. I am also kind of obsessed with sneakers and want to buy a pair by Golden Goose.

The expert: “Opt for an atypical stripe such as a continuous repeat pattern or weave that forms the illusion of a horizontal stripe, rather than the bold linear version. Also try and stick to one key item of clothing, like a dress or jumpsuit. Adding colour is always fun, too!” —Archana Walavalkar, co-founder and creative director, Stylecracker

Ragini Ahuja, 30
Designer, Ikai

The trend: All-over white

– I love my collarbones and shoulders. I like to emphasise this when dressing.

– White has always been my go-to colour. I wear a lot of separates but this is my first time in all-white.

– This look is versatile and ethereal. It can take me from day to night.

– I would love to splurge on an Alexander McQueen all-white pantsuit. I’m a jacket-and-trousers person and the sharp suit with wide shoulders is on my wishlist.

– I always pick up my T-shirts from the men’s department for the fit and feel. All Saints makes a great white tee.

The expert: “Layer sheer whites or pick performance friendly fabrics like neoprene that glide along your curves for a bodycon silhouette. To trim your frame, ensure the fit is snug and perfect.”—Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja, founders, Shivan & Narresh
