This is how much royals spent on their wardrobes in 2018

For some, the dream of being royalty is a reality, and while some are born into their roles of princess or queen, others marry into sovereign families. And while it is a family, albeit a very famous, very influential family, being a royal can be a full-time job too.

But what does one wear when meeting and greeting the public, opening hospitals and supporting the troops? It’s a job that requires balancing etiquette and long upheld traditions with rigorous schedules and gruelling world tours. In short, it’s a complicated feat managing a royal wardrobe and quite an expensive one, too.

Looking the part certainly does come with a price tag, at least that’s what data pulled from royal clothing watchdog UFO No More tells us, with the site detailing just how much royals from around the world spend on their clothing.

So who spent the most in 2018? Well, it should come as no surprise that the newly minted Duchess of Sussex had the highest spend of the year considering she was thrown into royal duties and a royal tour in her first few months of marriage. Plus, there was the need for a whole host of new maternity clothes when it was announced Meghan Markle was expecting her first child. Markle spent almost six times more on clothing than her sister-in-law Kate Middleton last year and this figure, per UFO, does not even include her custom Clare Waight Keller-designed Givenchy wedding dress.

Some of the biggest sartorial highlights for Markle in 2018 included a yellow Brandon Maxwell shift, a white Maggie Marilyn tuxedo dress and a navy Dion Lee wrap that the duchess wore in Australia during her first royal tour.

Where Markle spends isn’t just noteworthy for our wardrobe but it also means big business for the brands she taps—the Markle effect is alive and kicking! Some of the duchess’ favourite brands in 2018 included Aquazzura, Jason Wu, Asos, Victoria Beckham and Club Monaco.

As for Middleton, brands like Jimmy Choo, Jenny Packham, Jigsaw and Alexander McQueen were standouts in 2018.

Other famous royals on the list include Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway and Princess Charlene of Monaco. Ahead, see who else made the list and just how much it costs to dress like a royal.
