Bodice by Ruchika Sachdeva bent towards realism with a casting that spanned from songstress Rachel Verghese and DJ Zokhuma aka Arman Menzies to actors Kalki Koechlin and Jim Sarah, while the day’s finale, Raghavendra Rathore pulled out all the stops with Janhvi Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and a dancing Ranveer Singh in the audience at his show. Here are all the moments you probably missed from the latest showcases at Lakmé Fashion Week summer/resort 2019.

Part of a larger Diamond Producers Association sponsored ‘The Real Cut’ show, which included Rara Avis and Verandah, Saaksha & Kinni’s showcase came accessorised with sleek jewellery by AS Motiwala, Om Jewellers and others. The label, known for its use of geometric prints and patterns (recently worn by Frieda Pinto) on lady-of-leisure kaftans, had a lineup featuring sheer jackets, pants and skirts. A star layered piece: checks on checks on checks—all in sheer organza.
Rara Avis by Sonal Verma

Verma’s collection was a lesson in getting clever with colour. Featuring camel, fawn and tan, the all-beige palette of her safari-inspired collection introduced textures as a way to tackle tricky monotone. And then there were the denim shorts with cowri shell detailing, perfect for summer days spent at the beach, plus poplin ecru dresses with doodles in rainbow colours. Perhaps not an intentional move, but could this be a little way to inject Pride on the runway? We may have missed the parades happening all around the city, but we did find ways to spot the spirit of one love wherever we could.
Nikhil Thampi

Nikhil Thampi made his return to Lakmé Fashion Week with none other than supermodel Carol Gracias in tow. Now 40, Gracias walked long and lithe down the ramp in a cleverly cut rust dress. With ‘Semi Colon’, Nikhil Thampi took to a new territory for cuts that travelled low along the neck and back, while slits ventured higher up the thigh. The Dynasty-inspired strong shoulders and tuxedo dresses were an ode to ’80s maximalism—think Bianca Jagger at Studio 54. When a model glided down the ramp in a side-slit dress with nothing but semi colons holding the fabric in place, we were reminded of that iconic Liz Hurley safety pin dress that has gone down in history, and possibly made it to Nikhil Thampi’s mood board as well.
